Prior to coming to Umeå, I was a a Lecturer (Oberassistent) in the Geographic Information Visualization and Analysis unit at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich, Switzerland, a Lecturer in Geomatics at the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, The University of Melbourne, Australia, and an Associate Scholar at the School of Information Sciences, the University of Pittsburgh, USA.
I studied Computer Science (Informatik) with a minor in Cognitive Psychology. I received a Diplom (Dipl-Inform) in 2001 from the University of Hamburg, Germany, with a thesis on automatically placing You Are Here maps in outdoor environments. Then I was with the Cognitive Systems group at the University of Bremen, Germany. I was working in project I2-[MapSpace] of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center SFB/TR 8 Spatial Cognition from the center’s inception till 2010.
I received my PhD (Dr-Ing) in 2007 with a thesis on ‘Context-Specific Route Directions -Generation of Cognitively Motivated Wayfinding Instructions.’ After my PhD, I spent four months as a visiting researcher at the Department of Geomatics, the University of Melbourne, before continuing to work in I2-[MapSpace] as a Postdoctoral Researcher with teaching duties.
